A carbon offset is a financial tool representing a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. These greenhouse gas reductions are typically generated by the funding of zero emission projects including wind power, solar energy, and reforestation projects. Carbon offsets allow businesses to invest in these types of projects thus "offsetting" the greenhouse gases generated by their day-to-day activities at a reasonable cost.
While there are a number of greenhouse gases which cause global warming, carbon offsets are measured in metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. One carbon offset represents the reduction of one metric ton of carbon dioxide or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases. |
