Grab Bar Accessibility / ADA Requirements

Included below are some important measurements to consider when purchasing the grab bars for your facility. Be sure to verify all accessibility requirements of your local codes, which are often more strict than national codes, before you make your final purchase.
    

Grab Bars in Toilet Stalls

Side Wall

β€’ Grab bar must be 42” long minimum
β€’ Located 12” maximum from rear wall
β€’ Must extend 54” minimum from rear wall 

Rear Wall

β€’ Grab bar must be 36” long minimum
β€’ Must extend from centerline of toilet 12” minimum on one side and 24” minimum on the other side
β€’ Exception: If rear wall width does not permit a 36” bar, a 24” wide minimum, centered on toilet, may be used 

Grab Bars in Shower Stalls 

Transfer Type Compartment

β€’ L-shaped shower seat shall be 18” above floor
β€’ L-shaped grab bar shall be located along full depth of control wall and halfway along back wall
β€’ Grab bar must be 33-36” above shower floor

Roll-In Compartment

β€’ If a seat is not provided, grab bars shall be provided on three walls, installed a maximum of 6” from adjacent walls
β€’ If seat is provided, bars shall be provided on back wall and side wall opposite seat
β€’ Bars shall be 33-36” above shower floor 

Grab Bars in Tubs 

Bathtubs with Permanent Seat

β€’ Two grab bars to be installed on back wall
β€’ One bar to be 8-10” above the rim of the tub
β€’ Second bar to be 33-36” above bathroom floor
β€’ Each bar to be 24” long minimum
β€’ Each bar to be 24” maximum from head end wall and 12” maximum from control end wall
β€’ Control end wall to have one bar 24” minimum 

Bathtubs without Permanent Seat

β€’ Two grab bars to be installed on back wall
β€’ One bar to be 8-10” above the rim of the tub
β€’ Second bar to be 33-36” above bathroom floor
β€’ Each bar to be 24” long minimum
β€’ Each bar to be 24” maximum from head end wall and 12” maximum from control end wall
β€’ Control end wall to have one bar 24” minimum and head end wall to have one bar 12” minimum
